"What Is Change" Series

What is change? How do I define change using my personal experiences through the subjects that matter most to me? How do I use light, color, value, space, line, and perspective to accentuate the use of time in accepting the future and its uncertainties? How do our relationships with others subconsciously influence our decisions and notions about the future? I wanted to explore my various opinions of change from positive to negative without the use of facial expressions to convey my overall message of accepting future and understanding that family will always be there for all of my endeavors.

Using a method of condensing my thoughts of change to fundamental words, change is demonstrated through color and contrast to create urgency within the piece alongside dramatic angles, testing with medium, and props. I experimented with how I utilized time and space to emphasize the figure and their environment. I refined the way I thought about my series and its message through the inclusion of different and multiple figures, all of which I consider family, to reinforce the concept of solidarity in and after hard times and transitional moments of life.

"The Dialogue Between God and Man" Series

Christianity is a major influence on modern society. As a response to this, I aim to "investigate how it has shaped human evolution along with myself." My work uses cyanotype solution as an aqueous alternative photographic drawing medium (photography means light drawing) with a focus on layering, gestural marks, & monochromatic value, not only for the sake of experimentation, but also a parallel to Sun as God; my drawing process utilizes the sun as a primary mark maker. This portfolio takes inspiration from art history and how the past establishes themes of change from a religious perspective.

Resources and research on this cyanotype drawing process was limited, so I created my own best-practice technique through trial and error experimentation. I learned to work from diluted to concentrated solutions, making me consider how to achieve visual texture through value. Revisions were made in pen to further address line weight and layering, figure-ground relationship, and clarity. Challenges set by working on daylight hours to harness the sun taught me to overcome unexpected weather and seasonal changes accordingly
